Planexus shows Berlin what a lab container in 2026 can really do

A conventional lab container has 2,400 mm internal height. You can stand up inside — but working upright at a fume cupboard is barely possible.

Planexus LABtoGO has 2,750 mm internal height. 9.5 m external length. 3 m external width. A fully glazed front that brings real daylight into every Berlin hospital, research or pharma laboratory.

A conventional lab container fits entirely inside a LABtoGO. We do not call it LABtoGO without reason — it is the platform on which we configure BSL-2, BSL-3, GMP cleanroom, pile foundation and vibration isolation for Berlin.

Planexus solves the three Berlin bottlenecks at which laboratory projects regularly fail

12 borough offices, 12 different building-control practices

Berlin has no central building-control authority. Mitte reviews differently from Treptow-Köpenick (Adlershof) or Pankow (Buch). Anyone choosing the wrong application route or working with standard templates loses two to six weeks per borough in revisions — and watches the funding window close.

Planexus response: Borough-specific building documents from day 1.

Spree groundwater and Berlin sand make standard structural design worthless

Berlin lies in the Berlin–Warsaw glacial valley. Sandy soil class 3 to DIN 18196, inner-city groundwater often 2 to 4 m below ground level. A standard pad foundation settles visibly after 18 to 36 months — HPLC calibration, GMP tolerances and ISO 14644 classes can no longer be guaranteed.

Planexus response: Pile or raft foundation to DIN 4017/4020 prepared at the factory.

Hospital campus, research institutes, Adlershof – each site its own logistics

Sterile delivery on a hospital campus in Mitte is not the same as BSL logistics at a research institute in Wedding or vibration-sensitive siting at the Adlershof research campus. Anyone arriving with a standard logistics plan is turned away or given conditions that delay the project.

Planexus response: Site-specific installation and logistics plan before every delivery.

Lab containers for Berlin: what 12-borough federalism, Spree groundwater and hospital campuses demand of the engineering

Berlin is Germany’s densest cluster of university medicine, infection research, photonics, biomedicine and mid-sized pharma. Across 892 square kilometres, several university-medicine hospital campuses, infection and biomedical research, photonics and materials-research institutes in Adlershof, metrology in Charlottenburg, the Berlin-Brandenburg pharma cluster and several universities compete for land, permits and engineering capacity. Anyone ordering a container laboratory here is not buying a standard product — they are buying site intelligence.

We know this market in detail. We know that each of the 12 borough offices reviews building applications according to its own practice — anyone who ignores that fails in the revision cycle. We know that Berlin’s sandy soil class 3 to DIN 18196 and an inner-city water table 2 to 4 m below ground demand a pile or raft foundation to DIN 4017/4020. We know that the Adlershof research campus requires vibration isolation for photonics and laser technology, and that a hospital campus in Mitte requires sterile logistics under KhBauVO Berlin. These details are not in our quotation — they are the engineering foundation of every container that leaves our Albstadt works.

Made in Albstadt, turnkey in Berlin. Final assembly and interior fit-out are carried out with Wesemann furniture at our own works — a factory visit can be planned from either side. North on the A81, east on the A6 and north on the A9 via Würzburg and Nuremberg, the heavy-goods distance is around 720 kilometres; via the Berlin Ring (A10) and the Berlin-Süd, Berlin-Schönefeld or Berlin-Spandau junctions, all Berlin research and hospital sites are directly reachable.

Whether you need a mobile laboratory Berlin for a time-limited project during a hospital refurbishment, a modular lab container Berlin for a permanent expansion at the Berlin-Buch campus, or a container laboratory Berlin with BSL-3 containment for infection research — we deliver all three answers from the same platform: the LABtoGO from our Albstadt works.

Six engineering disciplines for the capital region

Planexus builds lab containers for Berlin that are tuned in every discipline to regional realities — not generic, but borough- and campus-specific.

Structural design and foundations

Pile foundation on Berlin sand

Soil class 3 to DIN 18196, Spree groundwater 2–4 m below ground level, pile or raft foundation to DIN 4017/4020 with hydraulic uplift protection — settlement-stable for more than 25 years.

BSL-2/-3 containment

Negative-pressure cascade −50 Pa

BioStoffV, TRBA 100, HEPA H14 on the extract-air path, autoclaved airlocks. Notification to LAGeSo Berlin and, where applicable, the borough public-health office — we supply the application documents for hospital and research standards.

Vibration isolation

VC-D to VDI 2038 for Adlershof

Spring-core bearing, no direct contact with the research floor slab. Synchrotron, laser and photonics research demand vibration tolerances below 1 µm/s.

GMP and pharma

EU Annex 1 + IQ/OQ/PQ

Pharma pilot production for the Berlin-Brandenburg cluster, clinical trial samples for contract researchers, cold-chain-capable study containers to the EU GMP Guide.

Cleanroom

ISO 14644 class 5–8

Semiconductor and photonics cleanrooms in Adlershof, low-particle materials analytics with HEPA H14 terminal filtration, classification with a particle counter at handover.

Three Berlin specifics

Three engineering requirements that national suppliers overlook — Planexus builds lab containers Berlin precisely for them

Generic landing pages for the whole of Germany do not address the three realities a lab container in Berlin actually has to withstand. We do — because we know the Berlin research and hospital market in detail, and our works in Albstadt produces what arrives here.

12 borough offices, 12 building-control practices – one procedure

Berlin has no central building-control authority. Mitte, Pankow (Buch), Treptow-Köpenick (Adlershof), Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf — each borough authority reviews building documents according to its own practice. Anyone marching a standard template through all 12 boroughs picks up revisions in each and loses the funding window.

Planexus standard: Borough-specific building documents, aligned with the competent district building office before application.

Berlin sand and Spree groundwater – pile foundation instead of a pad foundation

Berlin lies in the Berlin–Warsaw glacial valley on sandy soil of soil class 3 to DIN 18196. Inner-city groundwater often sits 2 to 4 m below ground level — and periodically higher near the Spree. Standard pad foundations settle visibly on such ground after 18 to 36 months — cleanroom classes are no longer certifiable.

Planexus standard: Pile or raft foundation to DIN 4017/4020 with hydraulic uplift protection, calculated site by site.

Hospitals, research institutes, Adlershof – each campus its own logistics and conditions

Sterile delivery on a hospital campus in Mitte follows different axes from BSL logistics at a research institute in Wedding. Vibration isolation at the Adlershof research campus demands a different set-up from KhBauVO-compliant fire protection at the Berlin-Buch campus. Anyone arriving with standard logistics is turned away — or given conditions that delay the project by weeks.

Planexus standard: Site-specific installation and logistics plan before every delivery — aligned with the hospital building office, safety officers and fire directorate.

Logistics proof

Albstadt works → Berlin: 720 km via the A81 / A6 / A9 / A10

From the Albstadt works the heavy-goods route runs north on the A81, east on the A6 and north on the A9 via Würzburg and Nuremberg to the Berlin Ring (A10). Junction options: Berlin-Süd, Berlin-Schönefeld, Berlin-Spandau — depending on the destination campus. Pure driving time is about 7.5 hours; with the required permits and escort vehicles it is typically one transport day.

Standard containers under 4 m width and 18 t do not require a heavy-transport permit — next-day installation is possible. Oversize units or vibration-sensitive modules for Adlershof are coordinated with a 60–200 t mobile crane and escort vehicles through the competent Berlin authorities.

From order to operational handover in Berlin takes 8 to 14 weeks.

Berlin permits

We prepare everything for the borough office, LAGeSo and the hospital building office

Berlin is the only major German city with 12 independent borough building offices. Depending on the site, LAGeSo (BSL-3), the hospital building office and the Berlin fire directorate can also be competent for a container laboratory. We communicate with all of them — you do not.

BauO Bln – building notification and borough procedure

The Berlin Building Code (Bauordnung Berlin, BauO Bln) is decisive. Permit-exempt works and the building notification apply depending on size — we check the classification of your site in advance and submit review-ready building documents to the competent borough office. Mitte, Pankow, Treptow-Köpenick and Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf each review according to their own practice.

LAGeSo notification for BSL-3 and GenTG

BSL-3 in Berlin requires a permit under BioStoffV (federal law) plus a notification to LAGeSo — Berlin’s state office for health and social affairs. For genetic-engineering facilities S1/S2/S3 an additional notification under GenTG is required. We supply the risk assessment, safety concept and complete application documents.

KhBauVO fire protection for hospital siting

Siting on hospital campuses and at hospital locations requires fire-protection concepts under the Berlin Hospital Building Ordinance, sterile logistics and coordination with the hospital building office and the Berlin fire directorate.

University construction Berlin

Siting at the Berlin-Buch campus, at research institutes in Adlershof or at Berlin universities is coordinated with Berlin’s university building administration and the relevant research-infrastructure planning.

FAQ — lab containers for Berlin

Seven questions, seven answers. Direct, and without marketing speak.

What does a lab container in Berlin cost?

The investment depends on biosafety level, cleanroom class, foundation type and site location. An analytics container in Adlershof sits in a different order of magnitude from a BSL-3 container with a HEPA H14 airlock for a university hospital or an infection-research institute. We calculate project by project — including pile foundations where the Spree water table is high, vibration isolation at the Adlershof research campus, and fire protection under the Berlin Hospital Building Ordinance (KhBauVO Berlin) on hospital grounds. Send us your site data and we will respond within 24 hours with an indicative range.

Which Berlin borough office is competent for my container laboratory?

Berlin has no central building-control authority — each of the 12 borough offices (Bezirksämter) runs its own building control with its own practice. Mitte reviews differently from Treptow-Köpenick (Adlershof) or Pankow (Buch). The Berlin Building Code (Bauordnung Berlin, BauO Bln) always applies. We identify the competent borough office from your address and submit review-ready building documents matched to that borough’s practice — saving weeks compared with a standard application that has to be revised three times.

How long does delivery of a lab container from Albstadt to Berlin take?

The distance is around 720 km — by heavy-goods transport north on the A81, east on the A6, north on the A9 via Würzburg and Nuremberg to the Berlin Ring (A10) and the Berlin-Schönefeld, Berlin-Süd or Berlin-Spandau junctions. Pure driving time is about 7.5 hours; with the required permits and escort vehicles it is typically one transport day. From order to operational handover in Berlin takes 8 to 14 weeks.

Will a standard container withstand Berlin’s sandy soil and Spree groundwater?

Berlin lies in the Berlin–Warsaw glacial valley on sandy soil of soil class 3 to DIN 18196. Inner-city groundwater often sits 2 to 4 m below ground level — and periodically higher near the Spree. Standard pad foundations settle visibly on such ground after 18 to 36 months. We calculate pile or raft foundations to DIN 4017/4020 with hydraulic uplift protection on a site-specific basis — instruments keep their calibration, and cleanroom classes keep their certifiability.

Can Planexus install a lab container on a hospital or research campus in Berlin?

Yes, that is technically possible. Siting on a hospital campus in Mitte or at the Berlin-Buch campus would require coordination with the relevant hospital building office and Berlin’s university building administration. Fire protection under the Berlin Hospital Building Ordinance (KhBauVO Berlin), sterile delivery along designated logistics axes and coordination with the fire directorate are standard. On hospital and research campuses in Berlin-Buch or other Berlin sites, crane-based, campus-compliant installation is possible — without disrupting ongoing hospital operations.

What requirements apply to BSL-3 containers in Berlin?

BSL-3 in Berlin requires a permit under the German Biological Agents Ordinance (BioStoffV) — federal law — a notification to LAGeSo (Berlin’s state office for health and social affairs) and, where applicable, the competent borough public-health office. For genetic-engineering facilities S1/S2/S3 an additional notification under the German Genetic Engineering Act (GenTG) is required. Technically the ordinance requires a negative-pressure cascade of at least −50 Pa, HEPA H14 on the extract-air path, autoclaved airlocks and redundant ventilation. We supply the risk assessment, safety concept and complete application documents — containers are tested to TRBA 100 and handed over with IQ/OQ/PQ.

Hire or buy — what makes sense for Berlin pharma or research projects?

Rule of thumb: for project durations under 24 months — for example interim laboratories during hospital refurbishments, time-limited third-party-funded projects or short-term pharma study campaigns — hire pays. For a permanent expansion at the Adlershof research campus, in the Berlin-Brandenburg pharma cluster or at the Berlin-Buch campus, purchase usually prevails, often with a hire-purchase option. We compare both models for your Berlin project, including balance-sheet impact and residual value.
