Planexus shows Stuttgart what a lab container in 2026 can really do

A conventional lab container has 2,400 mm internal height. You can stand up inside — but working upright at a fume cupboard is barely possible.

Planexus LABtoGO has 2,750 mm internal height. 9.5 m external length. 3 m external width. A fully glazed front that brings real daylight into every Stuttgart factory or research laboratory.

A conventional lab container fits entirely inside a LABtoGO. We do not call it LABtoGO without reason — it is the platform on which we configure BSL-2, BSL-3, GMP cleanroom and ATEX for Stuttgart.

Planexus solves the three Stuttgart bottlenecks at which laboratory projects regularly fail

The funding window closes faster than construction starts

The funding window of your third-party-funded project closes in nine months. Conventional laboratory construction in Baden-Württemberg takes eighteen to thirty months from building application to keys. You lose the project before it starts.

Planexus response: LABtoGO as a modular platform instead of conventional construction.

Section 50 LBO BW – one formal error costs six weeks

The Building Code of Baden-Württemberg, the notification procedure (Kenntnisgabeverfahren) and, where applicable, a notification under the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG) demand fully review-ready building documents. A single error at the Stuttgart Building Law Office means weeks of standstill.

Planexus response: Procedure-ready building documents from day 1.

Basin-climate reality destroys standard containers

Inversion weather, summer heat periods above 35 °C, clay soil on the Filder plain and the Stuttgart environmental zone with a green-sticker requirement. Off-the-shelf containers do not survive this — instruments lose precision within months.

Planexus response: F9 pre-filter, cooling load +35 °C, pad-foundation engineering from the factory.

Lab containers for Stuttgart: what the basin climate, Section 50 LBO BW and industrial density demand of the engineering

Stuttgart is Germany’s densest cluster for powertrain research, precision mechanics, materials analytics and sensor technology. In the tightest of spaces, the sports-car industry, tier-1 suppliers, materials laboratories, laser technology and a dense network of university and research campuses compete for land, permits and engineering capacity. Anyone ordering a container laboratory here is not buying a standard product — they are buying site intelligence.

We know this market in detail. We know that the basin inversion with fine-dust peaks of up to 50 µg/m³ at Neckartor forces F9 pre-filtration in the HVAC. We know that lithium-ion and powertrain research in Untertürkheim and Zuffenhausen requires ATEX Zone 1. We know that the Filder plain needs pad-foundation structural design to soil class 4, and that the Vaihingen university campus requires vibration isolation for optics and laser technology. These details are not in our quotation — they are the engineering foundation of every container that leaves our Albstadt works.

The shortest distance is our strongest competitive advantage. 80 kilometres. 1.5 hours of heavy-goods transport via the A81. Same-day delivery possible. A factory visit in under two hours — from either side. No northern German, NRW or Hessian supplier can offer that for Stuttgart.

Whether you need a mobile laboratory Stuttgart for a time-limited third-party-funded campaign, a modular lab container Stuttgart for a permanent factory expansion in Feuerbach, or a container laboratory Stuttgart with BSL-2 containment for the university hospital — we deliver all three answers from the same platform: the LABtoGO from our Albstadt works.

Three Stuttgart specifics

Three engineering requirements that national suppliers overlook — Planexus builds lab containers Stuttgart precisely for them

National suppliers run generic landing pages for the whole of Germany. None of them addresses the three realities a lab container in Stuttgart actually has to withstand. We do — because our works stands 80 km away, not 800.

Fine-dust filtration for the Stuttgart environmental zone

For years Stuttgart had Germany’s highest fine-dust values. At Neckartor, PM10 daily values regularly exceeded 50 µg/m³. A Stuttgart container laboratory needs F9 pre-filters plus HEPA H14, otherwise outdoor air contaminates every cleanroom class.

Planexus standard: three-stage filter cascade pre-configured at the Albstadt works.

Basin HVAC for summer inversion weather

The Stuttgart basin stores heat. Summers 2022/2023: above 35 °C on more than 20 days, no air exchange at night. Standard air-conditioning gives up, GMP tolerances collapse. A modular lab container Stuttgart must be designed for +35 °C outdoor temperature, not +28 °C like standard product.

Planexus standard: Cooling load +35 °C / 8-fold air change / redundant compressors.

Structural design for the Filder plain and slopes in Vaihingen / Feuerbach

The Filder plain is clay soil of class 3–4 with 80 cm frost depth. Slopes in Vaihingen and Feuerbach additionally require vibration isolation for optics and laser technology. A lab container Stuttgart on a standard foundation settles after 18 months — instruments lose their adjustment.

Planexus standard: Pad-foundation calculation per site, frost-free, vibration-isolated.

If the interim project can become a permanent site — hire payments can later be credited towards purchase.

Logistics proof

Albstadt works → Stuttgart interchange: 80 km, 1.5 hours

From the Albstadt works the heavy-goods route runs via the B27 to Hechingen, then north on the A81 via Empfingen and Herrenberg to the Stuttgart interchange. Junction options: Stuttgart-Vaihingen, Stuttgart-Süd, Feuerbach, Zuffenhausen, Bad Cannstatt, Filder plain.

Standard containers under 4 m width and 18 t do not require a heavy-transport permit — same-day installation is possible. Oversize units are coordinated with a 60–200 t mobile crane and escort vehicles through the Stuttgart Regional Council.

Inside the Stuttgart environmental zone we operate exclusively Euro 6 heavy-goods vehicles with a green sticker — across the board.

Stuttgart permits

We prepare everything for the Stuttgart Building Law Office

Unlike Hamburg or Berlin, Stuttgart has no decentralised borough-office system. The City of Stuttgart Building Law Office (Baurechtsamt) is centrally competent. For genetic-engineering facilities the Stuttgart Regional Council (Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart) is added. We communicate with both — you do not.

Section 50 LBO BW – procedure exemption and notification

Smaller containers under the annex to Section 50 LBO BW may be procedure-exempt. Larger installations require a notification procedure (Kenntnisgabeverfahren) or a building permit. We check the classification of your Stuttgart site in advance.

GenTG notification to the Regional Council

For genetic-engineering facilities S1/S2/S3 the notification is made to the Stuttgart Regional Council. We supply complete application documents, risk assessment and safety concept to the Genetic Engineering Safety Ordinance (GenTSV).

Fire protection LBO BW

Fire-protection concept under the Building Code of Baden-Württemberg, requirements for escape routes, fire-resistance duration and extinguishing systems. Coordination with the Stuttgart fire directorate (Branddirektion Stuttgart) for special use.

BImSchG notification

For activities requiring a permit, notification to the Stuttgart Regional Council. We assess whether your planned activity requires a permit from the concept phase onwards.

FAQ — lab containers for Stuttgart

Eight questions, eight answers. Direct, and without marketing speak.

How quickly does Planexus deliver a lab container to Stuttgart?

From the Albstadt works it is only 80 km via the A81 to the Stuttgart interchange — heavy-goods driving time under 1.5 hours. Standard containers under 4 m width and 18 t we deliver same-day. Manufacture of a configured LABtoGO or a BSL-2 variant typically takes 8 to 14 weeks from order. That makes us structurally four to six weeks faster than northern German or Hessian suppliers.

What does a Planexus lab container for Stuttgart cost?

We do not quote standard prices. Every Stuttgart project is assessed individually, because biosafety level (S2/S3, ATEX, GMP), cleanroom class, special equipment, duration and site conditions determine the calculation. A BSL-3 container for Stuttgart’s university landscape has an entirely different investment structure from an analytical materials container for the Filder plain. Contact us for a complimentary, no-obligation project-specific assessment — we typically supply a written indication within 24 hours.

What permits do I need for a container laboratory in Stuttgart?

The Building Code of Baden-Württemberg (Landesbauordnung Baden-Württemberg, LBO BW) is decisive. Unlike Hamburg or Berlin, Stuttgart has no decentralised borough-office system — the City of Stuttgart Building Law Office (Baurechtsamt) is centrally competent. Under Section 50 LBO BW smaller containers may be procedure-exempt; larger installations require a notification procedure (Kenntnisgabeverfahren) or a building permit. For genetic-engineering facilities an additional notification to the Stuttgart Regional Council (Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart) under GenTG is required. We prepare all building documents so they are procedure-ready.

Does Planexus also build BSL-3 for Stuttgart research institutions?

Yes. For BSL-3 containers we supply a negative-pressure cascade from −50 Pa, HEPA H14 on the extract-air path, autoclaved airlocks, redundant HVAC and complete IQ/OQ/PQ documentation to BioStoffV and TRBA 100. For siting on the Vaihingen university campus or at hospital sites in the Middle Neckar region, coordination with the university building office, the State of Baden-Württemberg (Vermögen und Bau BW Stuttgart) and the Stuttgart Regional Council would be required.

What distinguishes LABtoGO from a conventional lab container?

LABtoGO is 9,500 mm long, 3,000 mm wide and has 2,750 mm clear internal height — 350 mm more than a conventional container standard of 2,400 mm. The fully glazed front brings real daylight into the laboratory. The sandwich-panel shell achieves U-values around 0.20 W/m²K. In short: a conventional lab container fits entirely inside a LABtoGO. We do not call it LABtoGO without reason — it is the platform on which we configure BSL-2, GMP, ATEX and cleanroom.

Does Planexus also supply ATEX containers for Stuttgart powertrain and materials research?

Yes. Lithium-ion research in Untertürkheim, powertrain and materials analytics in Zuffenhausen and industrial testing in Feuerbach require ATEX-compliant Zone 1 or Zone 2 containers. We build explosion-protected ventilation, EX lighting to IECEx, conductive floor coverings against electrostatic charge, and redundant gas sensing with emergency shutdown. Documentation to ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU and the German Industrial Safety Ordinance (BetrSichV) is standard in the scope of supply.

Hire or buy — what makes sense for a Stuttgart project?

Rule of thumb: for project durations under 24 months — for example interim laboratories during hospital refurbishments, time-limited third-party-funded projects on the Vaihingen campus or transitional solutions during urban major-construction phases — hire pays. For a permanent expansion at industrial sites in Feuerbach or on university campuses in Vaihingen or Hohenheim, purchase usually prevails, often with a hire-purchase option. We compare both models for your Stuttgart project, including balance-sheet impact and residual value.

What does the Wesemann Group provide in addition to the container?

Planexus is part of Wesemann Holding GmbH, a group with more than 60 years of experience in laboratory fit-out. For Stuttgart customers that means: containers, laboratory furniture and cleanroom technology from a single source — no interfaces, no gaps in responsibility. Fume cupboards to DIN EN 14175, acid-resistant worktops, safety cabinets to DIN EN 14470-1, cleanroom components — all from within the group. One contact from planning through to commissioning.
